Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion

The neck pain, arm pain, and numbness you’ve been experiencing can make everyday life difficult. One option that can help is a procedure called Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion, or ACDF.

Here’s what that means:
In your neck, one of the discs between your spinal bones has become damaged and is pressing on your nerves or spinal cord. That pressure is what’s causing your pain, tingling, or weakness.

During the procedure:

·  We make a small incision at the front of your neck to gently reach the spine

·  The damaged disc is carefully removed, along with any bone spurs or fragments pressing on the nerves

·  Once the disc is out, we place a bone graft or a small spacer in the empty space

·  A tiny plate and screws are then used to hold everything in place while the bones naturally fuse together over time

The fusion process means that the two bones at that level will no longer move against each other. This stabilizes your neck, prevents further nerve irritation, and relieves your symptoms.

The benefits of ACDF include:

·  Significant pain relief, often soon after surgery

·  Improved strength, sensation, and mobility in your arms and hands

·  Long-term stability in your neck

Most people return to normal activities within a few weeks, although it can take a few months for the bones to fully fuse. ACDF has an excellent success rate and is a safe, proven treatment for cervical spine problems when other options haven’t worked.

Our goal with this surgery is to take the pressure off your nerves so you can feel better, regain strength, and get back to living your life without the constant pain and limitation.
